Initially, when I bought my first skill, it cost me 10g and 1 skill point. Why has the price risen to 40g?

cause it is a better skill.

I think with each skill you buy the price increases by 10 gold. I have bought several skills at the same time and the price increased by 10 gold per skill.

yes, its all dependant on how good the skill is. If i remember correctly at the towns near to the last missions the skills cost over 300 or maybe even 400

It's not how late on in the game it is. Holoman was correct: every time you buy a skill, the next skill will cost 10 more gold.

Yeah after buying many skills I am up to 520 gold maybe more would have to look for an exact amount.
